What exactly are the penalties for not following the class path

Ie: Going Spiritualist -> Driver -> Armor Rider

yes that is possible, the only downside i know off, you won't get your level 40 class dependant skills (if i recall correctly), in the case of armor rider that is reduce in repair cost for mau.

if there are any more side effects to it, i don't know.

You will also lose the levle 40 class skill "Improved Mech Performance.
If you want to focus on your MAU, it's the best to just go the standard way by specialist.
