We’re joined tonight by Paul Presley from MMM publishing, creators of the upcoming RFO Magazine. We’re going to be having a little chat about the magazine itself and what sort of thing they have in store for us.
Thanks for joining us Paul, just to start us off can you tell us a little about MMMpublishing and what you guys get up to over there?
We are specialist magazine publisher, producing magazines targeted towards specific mmo games, rather than traditional magazines which cover thousands of games per issue.
Could you give our listeners a summary of the upcoming RFO Magazine and what they can expect to find in its pages?
What trying to do is, because game is new, provide a focus point for the community away from comp, looking at things such as the making of game, the game community, various guides, basically something to enhance the players experience while away from the game.
Was it yourselves who approached Codemasters about producing a magazine, or did they come to you?
Bit of both, we’ve had success with our eve online magazine – Codemasters noticed this, and we were also looking for new projects – they came to us and we were pitching our net out too – Codemasters wanted to do something to enhance community, we wanted to do something similar so we kind of just came together in a nice synergy.
To what extent do you have usage of official materials, artwork etc for the game?
Well we’re working directly with CM who are our first port of call for everything, and through them we get unrestricted access to CCR and their materials – pretty much anything CCR produce, access to their developers, basically we can make requests anytime we need to – we’re as much as magazine that’s for CCR to get the game out there as we are for the players.
What plans do you have to allow the RFO community to be a part of the mag?
The players themselves can have as much access as they want, with everything from fan fiction to artwork which will be regularly featured – guides written by players, anything they want to say and basically anything they think is interesting they can get in touch with me at
rfo@mmmpublishing.com and we’ll take it from there. Another big thing is guild advertisements – we feature no commercial ads whatsoever in the magazine, and all the ads we do run are for guilds or community site, so if you have a guild and feel like you need to recruit new members you can simply put together an a4 ad and we’ll look at getting it in there.
Have you had much input so far?
Its not been too bad, we tend to find once the first issue is out, the trickle becomes a flood – we’ve had a couple of ads, some fanart and two fiction pieces as well as guides - I put the call out and was very pleasantly surprised by the response
So could you confirm which countries the magazine actually be available in?
Its available worldwide, no matter where you are – its one of the advantages of being mail order instead of newsstand
What sort of reaction and feedback have you gotten from the games community since the announcement of an official magazine?
Mostly positive, everyone seems excited by having a physical magazine they can hold in their hands, which is better than something on screen or on a website – people have asked why we’re not in shops or as a downloadable pdf – we think having something you can hold in your hands and read is really something that sets it apart, you can take away with you when not playing game it so yeah, feedback has be really pleasant so far.
Can you give us a little sneak-peak preview of some of the great stuff you have lined up for us in the first edition?
We have a couple of really good fiction pieces, information on the upcoming GIGA updates, as well as guides on the economy, crafting, how to be a specialist and various other various professions. In addition we have interviews with in-game guilds and some of the games staff, plus a really nice feature with those who created the visuals of the game in which we bring to light why they chose the different styles for each race.
Lastly, in 30 seconds, tell our listeners why they should grab themselves a subscription to the mag
The keyword is collectability, it’s a very high quality, very glossy magazine, not a quick fanzine put together in half a day. Its very well designed, beautiful to look at, beautiful to hold and its something you can take away from the computer, a way to keep yourself in the game world when your not actually in the game world
