You gain weapon skill with each hit, not per kill, so keep fighting stronger monsters with your lvl 2 melee weapon skill. I am a ranged fighter, but I let my ranged weapon skill lapse behind my melee skill and am now raising it back up. I've found out that you gain more weapon skill per hit if the mob you are fighting is on a higher lvl than your weapon skill. Right now, I have lvl 7 ranged and lvl 9 melee. When hunting in the accretia newbie town, I fight those bug looking things and giant armoured scorpions. On normal hits against the little bugs, I get .07% per hit, but on the big scorpions which are a higher lvl I get .14%, double from the weaker bugs. On average I get over 2% per kill on the armoured scorpion looking things.
Speaking of percentages, I once got over 35% (yes 35% no decimals) off one kill. I was fooling around with those people shooting those sword guys near the mines and I got the last hit. Instant lvl. I was wondering how all those accretian guys are close to lvl 30 and now I figured out why. Launcher spam on high lvl mobs. I fooled around with it only enough to get one lvl, but every single hit was giving me over 1% and as I mentioned when I got the last hit on one of them, I got 35%. Leveling up there is ridiculously easy, but the downside is that your skills lapse behind so I only fooled around with it for one lvl.
