just thought i'd add it here for future reference:
How to install/type chinese
typing chinese is easy to install if you have windows XP, most of the languages are already pre-installed in your computer. You don't need to download anything. All you need to do is add the desired language to your language bar.
you can do this by doing the following:
1. Open the language bar settings window (Start -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Settings
2. Click the Languages Tab
3. Under Text services and input languages, click the button that says "Details.." this will open the Text Services and Input Languages Window.
4. Under the settings tab and under installed services, click the Add... button.
5. Select the following:
Input language: Chinese (Taiwan)
Keyboard layout/IME: Chinese (traditional) - Phonetic
6. After you've added Chinese, it will appear in the list of install languages that you currently have on your system. Under Chinese, click "Microsoft New Phonetic IME 2002a" and click properties.
7. Select the following in the settings tab:
Input method setup: Intelligent IME
Default Mode: Chinese
Intelligent IME setup: enable learning
enable user phrase
8. Select the following in the keyboard mapping tab:
Keyboard mapping: HanYu Pinyin
9. That's all! you may want to set the key settings for switching between languages. You can do that by pressing the "key settings" button in the Text Services and Input Languages Window.
with these settings you can type chinese using alphabetical (romanji) chinese pinyin.
i.e wo = 我
if you can't display chinese.. then in the languages settings window (Start -> Control Panel -> Regional and Language Settings) click the advanced tab. Then under 'display language for non-unicode programs' select 'Chinese (Taiwan)'.
*note: i use a english edition of windows XP and i have about.. 4 languages installed on my system ^__^" so you should be fine (assuming you use an english edition of windows, but technically you can add any languages regardless of your default OS's language).
