To clarify about the races...
They're all humans.
The accretians were originally a group of scientists performing experiments on people with severe violent tendencies, thieves, and people with "strange" innate abilities (such as esp).
The current Accretians are a result of the decendents of the subjects with violent tendencies and the scientists, replacing body parts with machines, and using nanobots, etc. in an attempt to become the strongest beings in the universe. Their version of a "perfect human". Their goals are to expand through the universe and prove themselves to be the most powerful beings therein. Their methods, however, consume massive amounts of resources.
The Belato were the thieves. They were put on a planet with high gravity in an attempt to see if they would develop superior physical abilities to a normal human, which, they did. With the side effects of becoming quite shorter. The results weren't quite perfect though, so, the scientists (centered on the Accretian planet) conducted experiments to attempt to increase their intelligence as well. When things went wrong, the Bellato overthrew the scientists that were conducting experiments on them, and, have developed their own society, with greed and expansion as it's highest goals. To be able to achieve those goals, it's become necessary for them to ensure that neither the Toasters or the Cora take dominance.
The Cora originated as the test subjects with ESP and other such abnormal abillities. They were experimented on to improve those abillities, and, subjected to tests with animals that were native to their planet to introduce elemental abilities as well. When they became an independant society, their belief structures stemmed from what they knew of their own powers.
The current races are the decendants of those people. Probably a hundred generations later, however. From what I understand, none of the races are from the planet Novus. The Belato came for the resources... The Cora came and declared a holy war (Their history being built on holy wars, that's not very suprising). And the Toasters came to destroy everything that isn't them, and to become stronger.
